It’s that time of year. The air is thick with excitement. The dog days of summer are almost behind us and best of all, it’s opening day of the NCAA football season. (Plus, we’re only a week away from the start of the NFL.) Soon Saturdays will be spent tailgating, Sundays will be spent beer in hand and Monday, Thursday and Friday nights will stop being so empty. All because of the glorious little pigskin.
Football season is big for the West 6th district. Eater recently noted that The Rattle Inn, Star Bar and Little Woodrow’s are fantastic football viewing spots. But it isn’t limited to those. The entire street has all the comforts of home — TVs, food, and cold beers — and a great atmosphere of your laid back neighborhood bar. Football dominates every TV the majority of the week, and all feels right in the world.
First and foremost, our beloved Longhorns tip off this coming Saturday at Darrel K Royal Stadium against the Maryland Terrapins. The season opener is the first game with new coach Tom Herman. While we might be in for more head shaking, Texas does have the nation’s No. 16-29-30th-best players and the state’s No. 2-3-4-5-9-11th best players. Every bar will be a sea of burnt orange and the game will be aired nearly everywhere alongside ample buckets of beer, wings and brunch. If you’re heading to tailgate, pick up a few pizzas or a party tray of muffuletta sandwiches from Frank & Angie’s.
Heading to tailgate? J. Black’s party bus will be running from outside the bar to tailgate zone throughout the day (intervals from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm). Join them for breakfast tacos, brunch and drink specials (including a build your own bloody mary bar) and catch a quick ride over to the action. If you’re planning to come back and watch the Horns, enjoy the new 120″ projection screen!
Much as we love all things Texas, we celebrate all football properly down here. We have several designated watch spots for fans across the district – here’s where you can find your favorite NFL and NCAA teams.
The Rattle Inn — The Rattle Inn is home four the fans of four different football teams. Buckets of beer, three separate viewing areas, their famous Ranch Water (Hornitos Reposado Tequila, Cointreau, Lime, Topo Chico), and a large outdoor patio make for a great day of football.
