And May means sunshine (except this week, apparently), patios and Texas’ favorite holiday – Cinco de Mayo. Plus, this year the most exciting two minutes in sports falls on the celebration of the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla.
Austinites take their margaritas and tacos seriously, never more so than on Cinco de Mayo. The whole town will be celebrating all things Mexican (er, or at least Tex-Mex). Question: is a sombrero an acceptable derby hat?

Cinco de Derby | Star Bar
Cinco de Debry kicks off at Star Bar at 1 pm. Mariachis, margaritas, mint juleps and massive hats are in store at the original West 6th bar.
Cinco de Mayo | Dirty Bill’s
Cinco de Mayo is so essential to Texans that DB’s is opening early for fiesta shenanigans. They’ll start slinging drinks at 1 pm and will also have FREE @thesmokinrosetacojoint tacos. It’ll be packed (and you should fully expect bar-top dancing).
Cinco de Mayo Y Derby | Parlor & Yard
Mariachis take over Parlor & Yard from 2 – 7 pm and the place will be decked out with pinatas, taco specials, tequila and whiskey drink specials – naturally. DJ Mahealani will be spinning in the yard from 3 – 7 pm.
Derby De Mayo | Dogwood
The Dogwood West 6th will also be celebrating the Kentucky Derby with their annual dress-to-impress Kentucky Derby party with a Cinco twist. Expect mint juleps, margaritas and fajita plates.
Cinco de Mayo with La Tradizion | Rustic Tap Beer Garden
Everyone’s favorite [adult] rustic playground has a known history of throwing some awesome theme parties. Rustic Tap is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with La Tradizion. The Conjunto ban stays true to its roots with traditional accordion-driven sound while incorporating progressive elements and country and blues influences. The result is strong vocals and a signature sound that will keep you working off those margs. Expect copious margs, drink specials and todas las fiestas.
Don’t feel like partying? Head to Ranch 616 for a civilized Tex-Mex meal (and a margarita or two). And, Little Woodrow’s will have the playoffs on all TVs and beer specials! If you need to be counter-culture about it, grab a burger at Hut’s or some pizza at Frank & Angie’s.
