Summer Survival by West 6th

It's hot out there so we're sharing our tips for summer survival. Plenty of water, sunscreen and of course frosty adult beverages that cool you down.

What We’re Drinking to Cool off as Temps Climb

It’s the dog daze of summer. Some of us love it, some of us hate it, but we all have our summer survival tricks to stave off the heat. Enter delicious, cold beverages (and a hefty dose of AC). Here’s what we’re drinking when we need to cool off.

Heat Wave @ J. BLACK’S | J. BLACK’s offers a special Heat Wave special on Saturdays from 10 PM to 2 AM. Not only is DJ Kurupt spinning tunage, but frozen Ruby Red and Frosé are both only $5. Not into the pink stuff? We like The Smash (Woodford Reserve, simple syrup, lemon, berries) and the classically refreshing Austin Mule (Tito’s, lime, serrano, ginger beer).

Ranch Water @ The Rattle Inn | Out in West Texas, the sun blazes over the arid desert. The ubiquitous refreshment across bars out west is the Ranch Water (whether on or off the menu). If it works in the desert, it works for us. During the summer months, we can oft be found swiggin’ Ranch Water (Topo Chico, lime, reposado, Cointreau) at The Rattle Inn. If the sun is a little too bright on the upstairs patio, we head to the Whiskey Lounge for an equally refreshing Boulevardier of Broken Dreams (Old Forester Bourbon, Campari, Sweet Vermouth, chocolate bitters, molded ice ball).

Poptails @ Parlor & Yard | Popsicle meets cocktail in the perfect summer drink. Parlor & Yard uses local GoodPops to flavor craft cocktails. Choose from the Hakuna Matata Cooler (Hibiscus Mint GoodPop, Hendrick’s Gin, soda); the Pink Lady (Strawberry Lemonade GoodPop, Deep Eddy Lemon, Triple Sec, soda); and, the Mia Sandia (Watermelon Agave GoodPop, 512 Tequila, Ancho Reyes, lime, simple, soda).

Old Fashioned Milkshakes @ Hut’s Hamburgers | Is there anything better than an old school milkshake or malt in the summer? Maybe a Root Beer Float, which also lives on the Hut’s menu. Any of the three nostalgic icy pleasures transport you back to the carefree days of kid-dom when summers were full of swimming, bike rides and burgers. Pro-tip: you can order any milkshake swirled. Strawberry chocolate shake, anyone?

Capri Sun @ Green Light Social | There’s something about the adult version of our favorite childhood fruit punch that works. And you don’t have to stop there, complete the Green Light Social experience with frozen cherry limeade.

Frozen Mimosas @ Little Woodrow’s | Though afternoon’s on the patio can be a bit toasty, Little Woodrow’s frozen mimosas will keep your core temperature down.

Anything in a Glass @ Dirty Bill’s | Dirty Bill’s is a [welcomed] dark cave giving you protection from the UV rays that make your ice melt in under two minutes. Even better are their stiff drinks served by some excellent tenders and the good jukebox. No need to be fancy here, just get a vodka topo and enjoy not squinting for a while.

Of course, hydration is the biggest key to summer survival. Grab a cold, bubbly Topo Chico with your bevie of choice for the ultimate Austin chill factor. (Yes, everyone has them in the fridge) and drink plenty of ice water. Happy summering, folks.
